When Daria Schneider, the School Food Service Director for the Ridley school district, began working for the school district the breakfast programs existed only in the elementary schools. That was 28 years ago, and the program itself was fairly new at that time. She says that she is glad that she has been in school foodservice all these years and seen the changes, growth, and importance of the school breakfast program.
The school breakfast program has a rich history in Ridley School District. At the beginning, some of the schools did not have kitchens or cafeteria staff to work during the breakfast hours. The breakfast was handed out by custodians. The schools which had kitchens served breakfast. At one point, the breakfast programs were dropped because of decisions by the principals to only have milk programs. But after a few years, the breakfast programs were started once again. The programs have been consistent and strong for many years.
In the early 1990’s Daria applied for and received grants for school breakfast programs. She was able to use the funding to purchase refrigerators, toasters, and other food service equipments, and to hire additional staff.
Daria says that she would love to share her ideas and experience through the Breakfast Brigade program. She suggests starting with a simple program and them moving to a more elaborate program and working to expand the program. She would also like other directors to know that she has found that students are very happy and enthusiastic when healthy breakfast choices are made available.
