Janet Boyer is the School Food Service Director of the Wyoming Area School District and has been working in school food service for the past 18 years. She launched the school breakfast program eight years ago in the district’s elementary schools and three years ago at the high school level.
Between 2003 and 2006, breakfast participation among the schools in Janet’s district has doubled. However, she has had to overcome obstacles to reach her current level of success. Several years ago the bussing schedule was changed, resulting in a significant cut in the time allowed for students to eat breakfast. Meal counts plummeted by 25-50% as a result of the change. Janet made several changes including revising the menus to include food items that could be served more quickly. She also started an annual breakfast promotion program with giveaways and messages to encourage the children to try breakfast at school. Working through the PTO at each school, she invited parents to breakfast over two days in the spring. She feels that this helped gain buy-in for the program among parents and helped to break the stigma that breakfast in school is only for the low-income students. Janet highlights the importance of parents’ participation and regular feedback concerning their children’s in-school breakfast meals. “Parents need to see the new food items and try them; once involved they are really impressed.”
Janet regularly visits classrooms to teach students about the breakfast program and to promote nutritious meal options. She also takes students’ breakfast preferences and concerns into consideration when planning for the meals.
Students in grades 7-12 have a “Grab ‘n Go” option for breakfast. Janet is now focusing mainly on 7th and 8th grade students who are her potential customers for the next six years at high school level.
As a Breakfast Brigade member, Janet hopes to help other school districts identify and overcome barriers to initiating and expanding school breakfast programs. In this role, she expects to continue to learn and to gather ideas that she can bring back to her own district. Janet says, “I get as much out of helping someone with a new project as they get from my input and assistance. Sharing of experiences and ideas is a very important part of our job as Food Service Directors, we need to keep growing and keep our programs fresh as the business model around us keeps changing.” |
