Charter Breakfast Brigade Member, David Lloyd, Receives Award

Award:
Harrisburg School District’s School Food Service Director, David Lloyd, has been recognized by the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association for a Breakfast in the Classroom program that he recently instituted at Camp Curtin Elementary School. David’s first place Expanding Breakfast Award was among three granted to Pennsylvania schools for implementing creative methods to bring healthy breakfast to more children.

Background:
Lloyd is convinced that daily healthy breakfast increases children’s attentiveness and readiness to learn. Providing children with healthy options such as low-fat and non-fat milk, fresh fruit, 100% fruit juices, and whole grain products, helps children to not only understand how to eat healthy, but also gives them a jump-start to the day.

Description:
David utilized these concepts in the creation and implementation of a Breakfast in the Classroom program, which provides an easier-to-access breakfast to children in an environment outside of the traditional cafeteria.
To begin the program, Lloyd had to convince teachers that it would not cause any more work for them, and that it would not create a mess in the classroom or cut into academic time. He did this by utilizing the Expanding Breakfast training guide, and by explaining the need for the program. Lloyd then sent an introductory letter to parents, describing the program, and began the school’s new Breakfast in the Classroom program on the first day of the school year.

Results:
Results were astounding. Prior to the program, breakfast participation was 36%, and after implementation, 84% of the children were participating in the school breakfast program! Lloyd explains that children were more attentive, were better behaved, and were more ready to learn. Tardiness decreased by 57% and absenteeism decreased by 36%, with credit given to this creative Expanding Breakfast idea. The results of this program prove that providing a healthy, well-balanced breakfast to children at the beginning of their school day not only creates an enriched learning environment, but also happier, healthier students.
