Research Facilities
In This Section:
Listed below are research facilities Nutrition faculty have access. View some of the equipment and type of research conducted by Nutrition faculty.
Research facilities include nutritional biochemical laboratories in the College of Health and Human Development, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and the General Clinical Research Center. Equipment includes atomic absorption spectrophotometers, scintillation counters, HPLCs, electron microscope, ergometers, respirometers, facilities for measuring body density, a TOBEC, and constant-environment rooms. Access to the nuclear reactor permits activation analysis and nutrition research with irradiated animals. Radioisotope work on small and large animals is possible.
Animal facilities and care are supervised by Laboratory Animal Resources under the direction of a veterinarian. These include facilities for sheep, cattle, goats, horses, swine, and deer, as well as small laboratory animals.
In human nutrition, the facilities of the Nutrition Clinic, the Nutrition Center, the Gerontology Center, the Child Development Laboratory, the Childhood Obesity Center, Prevention Center, and Methodology Center facilitate development and evaluation of educational materials and approaches, intervention strategies, and counseling skills. Community and campus resources provide subjects for many research opportunities. Collaboration with faculty in community medicine, pediatrics, gastroenterology, and other departments of the Hershey Medical Center offers additional opportunities for clinically-related research.
In addition to the main library, reading rooms housing a collection of relevant books and journals are available in human development and animal industries.
