The Intercollege Graduate Program in Nutrition offers the M.S., M.Ed. in human nutrition, and Ph.D. degrees in basic nutrition science and applied human and animal nutrition. The programs are designed to provide fundamental training in nutrition based on an understanding of the related principles of biochemistry and physiology. After selecting an area of specialization, students are guided by the graduate faculty in designing a program of study that will help to develop the knowledge and skills appropriate to their career and professional objectives. Students usually prepare for careers in basic and applied nutrition research in universities, government agencies, and private industry; college teaching; industry, community, and public health nutrition education and intervention programs; animal industries; and dietetics.
Other career opportunities are emerging that are based on competency in nutrition and that draw on the disciplines of food science, anthropology, health planning administration, agricultural economics, genetics, poultry and dairy science, human development, business communications, and education.
Students are encouraged to obtain supervised college teaching experience (NUTRN 602) as part of their program.
